The California earthquake created a giant crack in the earth visible in satellite images

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake that shook California on Friday also opened a crack in the earth.

When the quake began at 8:19 pm, many rushed to cover themselves. It was the second strong earthquake to hit the area in less than 48 hours.

The immediate damage it caused was very clear. In the stores there were broken bottles and the liquid from cans that exploded covered the floors and other items that had been hanging on the walls had collapsed.

When the sun came up the next day, it was also clear that the topography of the area had changed.

The satellite images provided to CNN by Planet Labs, Inc. show that a crack has formed in the area near the epicenter.

The extensive crack extends some distance from an area that apparently contained water before. The erosion patterns in the desert sand indicate that part of that water was sucked.

The satellite image is not the only evidence that the topography of the region was changed by the earthquake.

A nearby highway is now closed after the tremors cracked and moved sections of the highway.
